The first trip

Our first trip on the camper was kind of last minute and had a lot of last second changes to it. Geoff was planning on going hunting on the opening day of deer season and due to the distance to the stand he decided that he just wanted to take the camper with him to stay out there the night before. Since it was the first trip and Amy and Jacob were going to Tallahassee the next day the decision to make it a bit of a family trip was easily decided. We loaded up and quickly as we could after Geoff got off work and got away far later than planned. After picking up Jacob and dinner we got to the pitch black powerless sight well past sundown. We expected some cold but didn't expect it to be literally freezing. We quickly started a fire and Geoff disappeared into the dark of the forest without a flash light on (he grew up out there his entire life so he could walk the woods blind folded) so that he could check out the stands before the next day After Geoff got back we all hung around having a good time while Geoff went over gun and hunting safety with Jacob again. This was turning out to be a great trip. We finally decided to go to bed since the boys had to get up  at about 4ish to get into the stands plenty early. We all snuggled into our own beds in the pop up (it can sleep up to 7 and has three decently large beds) and settled down for the night. The next thing we knew the temperature dropped like a teens voice after a few years of puberty. While Geoff was perfectly warm in his Boy Scout back packing sleeping bag he used in the mountains everyone else was about to break off their toes due to frost bite. Sometime in the night Amy got up and came to the back of the camper to wake up Geoff to ask if there were any other blackets and ideas to keep warm while us keeping to our own beds (we weren't married yet). When she stepped up to Geoff's bed something slightly scary and hilarious happened. The camper started acting like a teeter totter on the axle. Geoff had forgot to set up the stabilizers (Amy will never let Geoff forget this little oops). While the camper was lifting up and Geoff was fighting to keep from rolling out of the back of the canvas (keep in mind his arms are stuck in his mummy bag) all that could be heard besides Amy's screeches i Geoff telling her "BACK BACK BACK!!!!!!" Eventually the camper settled back down with no injuries and of course the 14 year old (Jacob) was so dead to the world he never even knew something was going on despite being in the rear of the camper with us. Geoff woke early and was getting ready to wake Jacob when he heard some hunters from a neighboring lease running dogs on his stand and through his hunting plot. With the dogs running through his killing ground he knew that there was no sense in going out nor in waking anyone so he went back asleep considering putting a few of those dogs in his ice chest instead. The next morning was a lot of fun of cooking over the open fire and packing up the camper. Over all, this was a lot of fun and a great learning experience for everyone. We intend to repeat this trip again in the future. This time Geoff will remember the stabilizers and we will find other ways to keep warm. Hope you enjoyed. More to come.

The camper

Here is our 1991 Jayco 1006 Deluxe. It was the Camper of campers back in the day.

The Popup Camper and the Newly Weds

This is a blog about a newly married couple deciding to restore an old popup camper on the edge of the scrap yard together. We bought a 1991 Jayco 1006 Deluxe popup camper a few months before we were married as a project. This project has turned into an adventure of early campouts and restoration stories worth telling. Feel free to post your comments, thoughts, and ideas for us and the world as we work on it. Now, kick back, grab a soda, try not to laugh too hard, and enjoy our adventure with us.
